Marie Callender's Chocolate Satin Pie is Cool, Creamy, Sensual and Smooth

When it's time for dessert, there's nothing quite as satisfying as a cool and delicious cream pie. While chocolate cream pie is a favorite sweet treat for myself and many others, coconut cream and banana cream pies are other top contenders.

Recently, I purchased two-packs of both Marie Callender's 3-ounce Chocolate Satin pie and 3.75-ounce coconut cream pies from Big Y supermarket in West Hartford, Connecticut. These mini pies were so tasty I had to go out and purchase a full-sized 25.6-ounce chocolate satin pie two weeks later.

Marie Callender's Chocolate Satin pie is the best frozen dessert that I've tried in a long time, and I highly recommend it.

Sizes

The Marie Callender's 3-ounce Chocolate Satin pie is quite satisfying for a mini dessert. The full size 25.6-ounce contains six 121-gram servings or two huge servings if you're really hungry. ha

A Tantalizing Texture

While it's recommended to thaw the Marie Callender's Chocolate Satin pie before eating it, I like to eat it straight from the freezer. The pie begins thawing while it's being consumed and the texture/mouth-feel is awesome.

The contrast between the smooth chocolate filling, the whipped cream, the chocolate chips and the chocolate cookie crumb crust is highly satisfying and almost decadent.

A Real Taste Sensation

If you're a chocolate-lover, you get to enjoy a chocolate crust, a chocolate mousse-like filling and dark chocolate chips in this pie. Each of the ingredients is very tasty and when combined, the resulting flavor is top-rate.

Although most chocolate cream pies feature thicker chocolate fillings, this pie is very similar, with the mousse-like filling offering a lighter filling with a very pleasant chocolate flavor.

Nutritional Facts

The 25.6 ounce Marie Callender's Chocolate Satin pie contains six servings and each serving contains roughly 530 calories.

Prices

The price that I recently paid for a two-pack of Marie Callender's 3-ounce Chocolate Satin Pie was $3.99.

The price that I recently paid for one 25.6-ounce Marie Callender's Chocolate Satin  Pie was approximately $7.99.

Overall Rating
All things considered, Marie Callender's Chocolate Satin is a delicious, cool and creamy dessert that always satisfies. This frozen taste treat is highly recommended.

Wonder creme-filled Chocolate Cupcakes are Delicious, High-Quality Treats

With a huge snowstorm poised to hit Connecticut in approximately 36 hours, I decided to shop for a few needed items at the West Hartford Big Y supermarket last week.

While standing in the incredibly long line for the self-checkout lanes, I noticed a nearby display of Wonder chocolate cupcakes. As a lifelong regular consumer of snack cakes and a lover of chocolate, I had to purchase one of these two-packs of cupcakes.

As soon as I saw the Wonder cupcakes, I wondered if they were actually Hostess cakes. Later that evening, I looked-up the connection between Hostess and Wonder and learned that they are now two separate companies.

According to several reputable websites, the Flowers Foods company now owns the Wonder brand, and the Hostess Brands company is now owned by the J. M. Smucker Company. Until 2012, the Hostess and Wonder companies were owned by the Interstate Bakeries Corporation.

Last night, I ate the two Wonder creme-filled chocolate cupcakes and I'm very glad I did so. Here's a little more information regarding these delicious snack cakes.

Size
The two-pack of Wonder Chocolate Cupcakes weighs-in at four ounces. These two-ounce cupcakes are standard in size, with a good ratio of cake to frosting.

It can be difficult to eat only one of these treats, however, because they're so delicious.

Price
The price that I paid for one four-ounce package of Wonder creme-filled chocolate cupcakes at Big Y was $1.50. To my tastebuds, these cupcakes are very similar to fresh bakery cupcakes, which are generally higher-priced.

Texture
One of the first things I noticed when I ate my first Wonder creme-filled Chocolate Cupcake was the moist-yet-dense texture. The chocolate frosting on top is thick and creamy and it works well with the pleasing chocolate cake.

Nutritional Facts
One Wonder creme-filled Chocolate Cupcake contains 200 calories, with 5 grams total fat. Each cake also contains 2 grams of saturated fat, 15 mg of cholesterol, 25    grams total sugars, 38 grams total carbohydrates and 2 grams of protein.

Flavor
When it comes to flavor, the new creme-filled chocolate cupcakes from Wonder are top-rate, for packaged snack cakes.

The cake has a deep and enjoyable taste, while the frosting offers an equally satisfying flavor.

Actually, the Wonder creme-filled Chocolate Cupcakes are the best-tasting snack food cupcakes I've tasted in years.

Overall Rating
If you're a fan of chocolate cupcakes, there's a good chance that you'll enjoy eating Wonder creme-filled Chocolate Cupcakes.

For years, I've been purchasing and eating Hostess Chocolate Cupcakes and I still enjoy eating them.

While both brands are excellent, it seems like the Wonder cupcakes provide a deeper, real chocolate flavor. Their slightly moist texture is another plus.

On a scale of one through ten, I would give the Wonder creme-filled Chocolate Cupcakes a solid 9.25. Highly recommended.

Texture
The chocolate frosting is creamy, not semi-hard like some other brands of cupcakes.

Some Unusual Pizza Slices in the Hartford, Connecticut area

Do these pizza slices look attractive and/or appetizing?

When I went to one of my all-time favorite West Hartford restaurants last Saturday, I ordered the same thing I frequently order. A small pizza with extra sauce and very light cheese, to-go. Sometimes, I order pepperoni, but this time I wanted a very simple pie.

All week long, I'd been thinking about getting a pizza on Saturday. One week earlier, I went to the same restaurant and placed the exact same pizza order. The pizza I got last week was superb! A generous layer of pizza sauce covered the delicious, golden-brown crust along with a small amount of melted and browned mozzarella cheese.

As a former pizza cook at three different pizza restaurants, and a lifelong pizza-lover, I know a little bit about making and baking pies. As soon as I opened the box holding this pizza, I said "What is this?"

When I looked closer at this funky pizza pie, it appeared that it had cooked in the oven, then another coat of pizza sauce was spread on top of the cooked cheese. It looked to me like the extra layer of pizza sauce on top was applied cold and was not heated in the oven.

Seeing this unusual pizza made me wonder if it was a pizza that was previously cooked, then covered with a bunch of extra sauce when I placed my order. From experience, I know that somtimes pizzas don't get picked-up by the people that order them, and will often sit on top of pizza ovens for hours.

Even if the pizza was baked fresh for my order, the extra sauce should be able to fit comfortably underneath the cheese. While I am very fond of this restaurant's pizza sauce, the visual presentation was not very appealing.

It should be added that when I was paying the cashier , I could easily look into the mostly-open kitchen, and noticed three new employees whom I'd never seen before. Two of the staff members appeared to be prep cooks and one guy was holding a pizza peel while standing near the pizza ovens.

Since I've been patronizing this restaurant for decades now, I know some of the employees by name, including the waitress who rang me up that evening. A few minutes after seeing this freaky-deaky pizza pie, I called the restaurant and spoke to the waitress on the phone.

It was reassuring to hear her say that I could bring the pie back right away, and they would cook another one for me. Because it was already fairly late at that point and I didn't feel like going out then, I said I'd try to get there the next day.

Although I wasn't able to get back to the pizza restaurant the following day, I do appreciate their offer to replace the pie. Maybe, in the future, I'll have to check the appearance of all the pizza pies I order. Hopefully, not.

Groovy New Hand-Painted Wall Switch Plates- 2025

In the early-2000s, I was regularly painting lots of light switch plates, and full-sized paintings .

Switching from 12, 16 and 24-inch canvases to "4.5 x "2.75 plates can take some getting used to.

In the past few months, I painted these wall plates. The plates are great conversation-pieces, and add a sense of fun to any room they're placed in.

Why Doesn't Hostess Offer Peanut Butter and/or Chocolate-Peanut Butter-Flavored Donettes Mini Donuts?

The combination of chocolate and peanut butter is very popular with consumers of all ages. Reese's peanut butter cups are now available in a wide variety of shapes, sizes and flavor variations.

For decades now, I've been eating Hostess Donettes on a regular basis. More often than not, I purchase the chocolate frosted variety, but sometimes, the powdered sugar option is the Donette of choice.

Occasionally, I'll also purchase and eat Little Debbie brand mini donuts, but they're often not available at the stores where I shop.

Ever since I was a kid, the food I eat more than any other is peanut butter. Quite often, an opened jar of Jif or Skippy peanut butter will sitting on my kitchen counter.

Sometimes, when I'm eating Hostess chocolate frosted or powdered white sugar Donettes, I'll put a little bit of peanut butter on them. The combination of flavors is boss, groovy dynamite! In other words, the flavors work very well together.

After experiencing peanut butter on these chocolate mini donuts, I wonder if Hostess has considered producing plain peanut butter-flavored Donettes and/or chocolate/peanut butter-flavored mini donuts.

Most likely, either variety of peanut butter-flavored Hostess Donettes would be a big hit with consumers.

If Hostess were to begin selling peanut butter and/or chocolate/peanut butter-flavored mini donuts, do you think you would purchase and eat them?

The Combination of Ritz Crackers and Fresh Cherries is Incredibly Delicious

If you're looking for a refreshing, sweet and salty snack, the combination of Ritz crackers and fresh cherries certainly fits the bill.

Like many other taste sensations, the combination of cherries and Ritz crackers was discovered largely by coincidence.

One night a few weeks ago, I decided to eat a couple of the fresh cherries I purchased earlier that day at Big Y supermarket. As I bit into a cherry, I noticed the partially full sleeve of Ritz crackers a few inches away, on the kitchen counter.

Since I really enjoy eating both Ritz crackers and fresh cherries, the two items were combined for the second bite of the cherry. The mild saltiness of the crackers complements the natural sweetness of the cherries, creating a delicious taste treat that's fun to eat.

Since I first tried combining fresh cherries and Ritz crackers, I've eaten the combination several times. This naturally sweet and salty snack is highly recommended.

Little Debbie Cookies & Creme Brownies are Sweet, Full-Flavored Treats

Are you a fan of brownies? Do you enjoy eating Cookies and Cream-flavored desserts? You might want to try the new Cookies and Creme-flavored brownie that the Little Debbie snack cake company introduced fairly recently.

When I first saw the Little Debbie Cookies & Creme brownies at a local corner market in Hartford two weeks ago, I was impressed with the appearance of the packaging. Half of the brown and white brownie is visible, with the blue and white label offset by the red and white Little Debbie logo. When I look at the package, the colors remind me of a Winter snowstorm.

As soon as I tasted the Little Debbie Cookies & Creme Brownie, I realized that this chocolate treat really packs a sugary punch. Between the chocolatey brownie part and the white, creme-flavored hard frosting, there's a whole bunch of sweetness rocking this snack cake.

Size
The single-serving Little Debbie Cookies & Creme brownie weighs-in at four ounces, and it measures roughly 5.5" x 2.5". Because of its large size and rich sweetness, I find that eating one-half of one of these brownies is pretty satisfying.

Price
At Amigo's Market, I think I paid $2 for one of the Little Debbie Cookies & Creme brownies. Several online websites sell these single-serving brownies, and the price averages around $2.50 each.

Nutritional Facts
One single serving size Little Debbie Cookies & Creme brownie contains about 510 calories. Each brownie contains 3.5 grams of saturated fat, 0 grams trans fat, 25 grams total carbohydrates and 3 grams of protein. With 42 grams of sugar, this brownie is definitely a sweet treat.

Taste/Flavor
When I tried the Little Debbie Cookies & Creme Brownie for the first time, the initial couple of bites I took tasted quite good. Pretty quickly, however, I noticed that this treat was very rich. Due to the rich, sweet flavor and dense consistency, I've eaten only one-half of these brownies on each of the two times I've tried the item.

It seems as though these brownies would really shine when paired with a frosty glass of milk or a hot cup of coffee.

Packaging
The single-serving size Little Debbie Cookies & Creme brownie is packaged in cellophane, with the top half being clear, and the lower half is dark blue with white writing.

Overall Rating
If you like eating very-sweet brownies and/or Cookies & Cream-flavored desserts, there's a good chance you'd enjoy eating a Little Debbie Cookies & Creme brownie.

Personally, I'd prefer to eat brownies that are less sweet in flavor. For myself, one-half of one of these brownies is enough to satisfy my sweet cravings. If you're looking for a large snack treat that's pretty reasonably priced, the Little Debbie Cookies & Creme brownie may be just the right treat for you.

Outdated Potato Crisps at the Gas Station Mini-Mart

Pringles are everywhere these days. Whether it be at a large supermarket, small bodega, gas station, pharmacy or online retailer, there's a pretty good chance you'll find these canned potato products there.

For approximately two years now, I've been purchasing different varieties of Pringles from a range of different businesses. After years of buying ridged Utz potato crisps from the bodega around the corner from my apartment, I didn't appreciate the way the price of their chips doubled there a couple of years ago.

When I was a kid, my Family would often have State Line potato chips on hand, and they still make some very good chips, but they can be hard to find. Munchos are also pretty awesome, but they're usually even harder to find.

Even though they can sometimes taste a little greasy, the different varieties of Pringles are pretty consistent in size and flavor. Most of the time, they're also unbroken chips.

A couple of weeks ago, I stopped at a local gas station/mini food mart in my neighborhood to buy lottery tickets and a can of pizza-flavored Pringles. Keep in mind that this is one of the largest and most well-known gas station brands, with locations everywhere.

A small rack containing two shelves of various Pringles varieties was situated in the mini-mart section. On the top shelf were small, half-size cans of the potato crisps, and on the bottom shelf, approximately 25 full-sized cans of different Pringles varieties were displayed.

For decades now, I've been checking the expiration dates on most of the food items I purchase. When I looked at the bottom of one of the cans of Pizza-flavored Pringles from the shelf, I thought I was seeing things.

The expiration date on the bottom of the can read October 2022. After looking at the date several times, to confirm what I saw, I put the can back on the shelf, and picked up another one. The second can also had an expiration date of October 2022.

By that point, I was pretty freaked-out at discovering the two pizza-flavored cans of Pringles having expiration dates that were more than a
year out of date. Just for ha-ha's, I checked the expiration date on a can of Pringles BBQ-flavored chips, and it was in early-2023.

After discovering that the three regular-sized cans of Pringles were almost 1.5 years past the expiration date, I decided to check the freshness of the half-sized cans of Pringles on the top shelf of the rack.

All three of the half-sized cans that I checked had early-2025 expiration dates. Go figure.

So far, I haven't had a chance to mention the prehistoric Pringles to the staff members at the gas station/mini mart, but I hope to do so soon.

The employees at the gas station seem pretty honest and ethical (I hope), and my guess is that they don't even know about the outdated potato crisps. Maybe, when the chip vendor brings their products in for re-stocking, nobody is regularly checking expiration dates and/or rotating stock.

Whatever the reason may be, it's always unacceptable to sell outdated food items.

Is it worth the effort to check the expiration dates on food products?

Definitely, yes.

ZZ Top: The Little Ole' Band from Texas that Chugs and Rolls Like no Others..RIP Dusty Hill.

Since the 1970s, ZZ Top has been one of my favorite bands, and I heard about Dusty Hill passing away a while after it occurred. This painting is a tribute to Dusty and ZZ Top, and I had to include their Mexican Blackbird. Rock on!

A Kid Rock Masterpiece

In Connecticut, Massachusetts, Vermont and New York, there are geographical locations named Podunk. The very popular Bluegrass Festival was founded in East Hartford, CT, in the mid-1990s, and now takes place every year in Goshen, Connecticut.

Recently, I was turned-on to the one and only Kid Rock's musical definition of "Podunk," and it is one wild place! As time has gone on, I've increasingly grown to appreciate Kid Rock's music, and the subtle humor his songs often contain.

The band playing on the porch is too cool, especially the single snare drum. Check it out!

The one song that I instantly think of when Kid Rock is referenced is "Only God Knows Why" from 1998. It's the first KR song I heard, and it's still my favorite.

Hank Williams Jr - If You Don't Like Hank Williams

Sometimes, this fast-paced, challenging world can bum people out. There are times when an upbeat country song by Bocephus can help anyone to have a positive attitude adjustment.

The CVS Store on Farmington Avenue in Hartford was Once a Thriving, Community-Oriented Business. Now, it's Just a Memory

On May 1, 2023, the CVS Pharmacy at the intersection of Farmington Avenue and Whitney Street in Hartford, CT, permanently closed its doors.

While the West End CVS store may  have appeared to be just another one of the thousands of cookie-cutter stores the chain operates, it represented much more to those of us who live in the neighborhood.

In a food desert such as the West End, the Farmington Avenue CVS served as a grocery store of-sorts for many people of all ages.

Even though pharmacy hours had recently been reduced, local residents of all ages have been able to get their prescriptions filled there seven days a week. In conversations with the pharmacists at that CVS, I was informed more than once that well over 1,000 prescriptions were filled there every week.

In the past few years, security guards were stationed in the front of the store, and an increasing number of items were being kept under lock and key at the West End CVS. Whether you were seeking air freshener, toothpaste, an anti-perspirant/deodorant, cologe/perfume, allergy pills or a host of other items, you would have to ask an employee if someone could open the locked display case.

Many times, employees of our neighborhood CVS told me about people coming in the store, grabbing multiple items, then walking out the door, seemingly oblivious to activated alarm systems. Staff members at the store also told me that the shoplifting issue there was a factor in the store's closing.

If you discovered that you needed a ruler, Sharpie marker or notebook, you knew that CVS would probably have something to fit the bill. When some thumbtacks, packaging tape, dishwashing liquid, laundry detergent, children's toys and games, greeting cards, stuffed animals, over-the-counter medicines, beauty and grooming products and even small hand tools were needed, CVS was often the place where these items could be purchased.

For years, I purchased at least two 2-liter bottles of A & W Zero Sugar root beer every week at the Farmington/South Whitney CVS store. Even though I could get most of the items at supermarkets or other CVS stores, the convenience of being able to walk across the street to get some ice cream or a loaf of Pepperidge Farm bread will be sorely missed.

The former CVS property is situated diagonally across from the apartment complex where I've lived for more than 20 years. That store was a  regular destination-point for people of all ages, and in my opinion, brought a sense of positive action and stability to an area that can definitely use both attributes.

If you take a look at Farmington Avenue between South Whitney Street and Sisson Avenue now, in May 2023, you will see a lot of empty storefronts. The clothing store next to Amigo's Market, at least two businesses in the building that houses West End Pizza, the bar and store next door at Farmington and Sisson, the former Cinerama/Braza property and now, CVS are all empty.

Hopefully, a small grocery store, dollar store or restaurant will occupy the former CVS property before too long. The South Whitney location would be ideal for a Dollar Tree, C-Town or 7-11 outpost, or as a new location for the Family Dollar that now sits at the intersection of Farmington Avenue and Sigourney Street.

As with other West End residents, I grew to value the importance of a business like CVS in an urban environment, and I got to meet lots of employees who were friendly, knowledgeable and helpful.

At the New IHOP Restaurant in West Hartford, CT, the Chocolate Chip Pancakes Save the Day!

Back in the mid-to-late 1970s, my first real job was that of busboy and dishwasher at the former West Hartford, Connecticut, International House of Pancakes (IHOP) restaurant.

For several decades, a traditional, Swiss-chalet-style IHOP was situated at the corner of New Britain Avenue and South Main Street in West Hartford.

Getting hired at that IHOP was almost a rite of passage for many West Hartford teenagers and young adults, especially residents of the Elmwood section of town. Working there was actually a lot of fun, and I went back to work there again, after completing a chef-apprentice program.

Earlier this year, when I read that IHOP was opening a new restaurant in West Hartford in 2022, I was thrilled. Countless times, I had wondered if the chain would reopen in West Hartford, and I looked forward to ordering chocolate chip pancakes, French toast, blueberry pancakes and boysenberry syrup.

Not Your 1970's and 1980's IHOP

Located on Kane Street in West Hartford, Connecticut, the new IHOP is housed in the former home of the Gold Roc Diner. The exterior has a modern look, and the interior is bright and fairly large.

When I visited, the new restaurant had only been open for a couple of weeks, so it hadn't really formed a personal atmosphere yet. There were lots of uniformed employees running around, and the manager was clearly overseeing the operation, from the cash register area.

This definitely wasn't the old West Hartford IHOP, where I had my 1968 Triumph 650 chopper motorcycle parked in the back room, next to the ice machine. At the old restaurant, plenty of partying was going on, and some of the waitresses and cooks were romantically involved with each other.

Most of the time, I worked on the night shift at the old West Hartford IHOP. At night, the assistant managers were usually in charge, and the atmosphere was more relaxed than during the daytime.

On the night shift, at least one of the cooks would make a regular run to the package store across the street. The cooks and dishwashers would give their beer order and money to the designated runner. After he returned with the alcohol, most of us kitchen workers would then put some of our beers inside of the restaurant's ice machine. It was very common for us kitchen workers to be partying throughout our entire work shifts.

When I visited the new West Hartford IHOP, my intention was to try several different dishes. It was my hope that everything was going to be great, and I'd be able write a very positive review.

2x2x2=A Disappointing Breakfast

When I looked for breakfast-combination plates that contained pancakes, eggs, choice of protein and potatoes, I decided on the "2x2x2" plate

The two scrambled eggs were decent enough, but the bacon was a definite let-down. Even though I specifically asked for well-done slices, what I received were two slices of limp, under-cooked bacon.

As a former restaurant cook, I can't help but wonder why more restaurants don't bake their bacon instead of frying it. When you bake bacon in a conventional oven, the meat cooks evenly every time.

When it comes to rating the flavor of different brands of bacon, I generally compare them to the flavor and texture of Oscar Mayer bacon. The flavor of the bacon slices I received yesterday was nowhere near as good as the pleasant, reliable flavor of Oscar Mayer.

The two buttermilk pancakes that were served with the 2x2x2 plate were the best part of the meal. The IHOP flapjacks were good-sized, and were cooked to a deep, golden color.

While the IHOP menu does offer a choice of regular or crispy hash browns, I decided to go with the regular variety. The basic flavor of the potatoes was okay, but they were very loose, and decidely not crispy.

A strange, Twilight Zone-thing happened after I began eating the pancakes. After I had eaten three or four bites out of each pancake, they suddenly separated, from top to bottom.

With decades of experience eating and cooking pancakes, I'd never seen the entire top half of one separate from the bottom before. As for the boysenberry syrup, it appears that it's no longer on the menu at the pancake house.

The Classic Burger

When I worked at the old West Hartford IHOP many years ago, their burgers were actually very good, and I enjoyed cooking them as much as I liked eating them.

The Classic Burger that I ordered at the new West Hartford, CT, IHOP looked great in its plastic to-go container. The good-sized burger was served on a Brioche roll, with fresh lettuce, tomato and red onion slices and a pickle slice adorning the top.

After taking one bite of the Classic Burger, however, I was unhappy with the flavor. For months, I'd been looking forward to eating a burger and fries from IHOP, and I was pretty disappointed.

The French fries served with the burger were okay, but I ate less than half of the Classic Burger. My favorite parts of the meal were the Brioche roll and the pickle slice. Ha.

Chocolate Chip Pancakes Save the Day (Almost)

Being the International House of Pancakes, it's only fitting that the best of the three meals was a pancake dish. If you're a fan of chocolate, IHOP's Chocolate Chip pancakes are a truly decadent breakfast treat. If you're familiar with them, then you already know just how good these flapjacks are.

Sweet, but not too sweet, IHOP's chocolate chip pancakes have been a popular menu item there for decades. The flapjacks are served with a small ramekin of a very tasty chocolate syrup, as well as another small container of extra chocolate chips.

When I saw the menu price of $11.49 for four chocolate chip pancakes, I was quite surprised. That works-out to roughly $2.87 per pancake. Since I was already getting two pancakes with the 2x2x2 breakfast, I asked the manager if I could order a half-portion. Fortunately, the manager said it was no problem.

IHOP's chocolate chip pancakes are not only delicious, but they're also pretty large. Large enough to eat one at a time, and still be mostly satisfied. On a flavor and texture scale of one through ten, I'd definitely assign these treats a solid rating of 9.5.

Checking my receipt, I notice that the charge for the chocolate chip pancakes was only $3.19. Not sure why the price is so low, but I'm not complaining.

There was supposed to be a points program bar code on the bottom of the receipt that could be used for validating free, future food orders. For some reason, no bar code was on my receipt. When I called the restaurant to see if I could still receive the free pancakes without the bar code, I was told there was nothing the restaurant could do.

Somewhat of a Letdown

After waiting years for IHOP to return to West Hartford, I'm pretty disappointed with the food and overall service provided by their new restaurant there. Having previously worked at IHOP, I think the overall dining experience at the new eatery could certainly be improved.

The prices are high, the portions are so-so, and, unfortunately, the flavors of the different foods are not as good as they used to be. If the restaurant's management at least honored the advertised points program, that could somewhat offset the negative aspects of the situation.

It was also surprising to see that the various to-go dishes in my order were packaged in very large, difficult-to-open, platic containers. From environmental and cost perspectives, the packaging seemed excessive.

To be fair, the new West Hartford, Connecticut IHOP had opened for business shortly before I visited. It takes time to get new businesses in-shape. If the menu items were tastier and less-expensive, I'd give this new spot a higher rating. For now, however, I have to give this restaurant a rating of 7 out of 10.

Product Review: "Nostalgia" brand MyMini One- Slice Toaster

Have you ever seen a single-slice toaster? There are plenty of traditional-style, two-slice toasters available today, as well as a good number of four-slice models.

Until a couple of weeks ago, I'd never seen a single-slice toaster before. While shopping on the amazon.com site, I noticed a photo of a small, aqua-colored, single-slice toaster. The name brand of the retro-looking toaster is Nostalgia, and they have quite a few other kitchen/household small appliances listed on Amazon.

For months, I'd been putting off purchasing a new toaster, and was looking for a small, but efficient model. After thinking about it for a couple of days, I decided to buy one of these retro-looking toasters.

Toast is such an under-rated food. With its pleasing texture, toast is quick and easy to prepare at any time of the day or night. With a single-slice, retro-style toaster, it can be fun to toast a slice of bread or a muffin.

Here is a quick and honest consumer review of the Nostalgia Single-Slice Toaster.

Appearance

As soon as I saw the Nostalgia Single-Slice Toaster, I thought I would probably end up buying it. The pastel acqua color of the product has a real 1950s vibe, and it would probably look good in any environment.

Size

The Nostalgia MyMini Single Slice Toaster measures-in at nine inches long, six inches high and three inches wide. Because my apartment is pretty small, I was looking for a small, dependable toaster.

Being a single-slice toaster, this appliance features an extra-wide toasting slot. The larger slot is particularly great for toasting English muffins, big slices of bread and half-bagels.

The small size of this toaster makes it easy to store it in either a vertical or horizontal position. The Amazon website lists the weight of the Nostalgia toaster as 1.69 pounds,

Price

The price that I recently paid for one Nostalgia MyMini Single Slice Toaster on the Amazon website was $19.95. For about three weeks now, I've been utilizing the toaster almost-daily, and it seems to be an excellent product.

 Functionality/Effectiveness

Since the first time I plugged it in, the Nostalgia MyMini Single Slice Toaster has worked very well. Sometimes, when you plug-in a new toaster for the first time, the appliance might emit an electrical odor, or even smoke a little. Not the case with this nifty, little machine. Every time I've used it, it's done what it's supposed to do, with no electrical flavors or smells.

On one end of the toaster, there is a round, dark/light knob, as well as the lever that pushes the bread down for toasting. Being analytical, I've noticed that when smaller pieces of bread are being toasted, the dark/light knob needs to be set at a darker adjustment in order for the lever to stay down

Availability

When I looked-up the Nostalgia MyMini Single Slice Toaster on Google, I quickly learned that in addition to amazon.com this small appliance is sold at numerous retailers.

All things considered, the Nostalgia MyMini Single Slice Toaster is an attractive and functional product that's fun to look at and utilize. Befitting its name, this toaster also provides a sense of nostalgia when it's used.

The whole idea of a single slice toaster is pretty excellent, for lots of reasons. Sometimes, the idea of eating one piece of toast is simply more appealing than eating two.

Because of its small size, the Nostalgia MyMini Single Slice Toaster can fit just about anywhere there's an electrical connection. Not only can this lightweight toaster be used at home, but it can easily be stored and used in the workplace.

On a scale of one to ten, I would assign the Nostalgia MyMini Single Slice Toaster a rating of 9.25

Campbell's Clam & Corn Chowder Successfully Combines Two Classic Soups Into One

A Tale of Two Clam and Corn Chowders

Some of the best recipes are created inadvertently, or from necessity. Tonight, I was starting to heat a can of Progresso Clam Chowder, when I noticed a half-full can of corn remaining from the previous night's supper, sitting in the refrigerator.

Since I'm also a fan of corn chowder, I figured 'why not add the corn to the clam chowder?' I'd never heard of clam-corn chowder before, but why not try it?

After adding a good amount of corn to the clam chowder, I took a taste, and it was awesome! This soup was one of the best of many clam chowders I've eaten. For a second or two, I thought maybe there was a great new soup idea being born.

Approximately an hour after I ate the delicious clam-corn chowder, I clicked on an online banner ad for Chunky Soups, from Target. Being a fan of these soups, I was perusing the selection that was available, and what did I see being advertised? Chunky Clam and Corn Chowder. Ha

While at the supermarket a few days later, I saw that they had the Campbell's Chunky Clam and Corn Chowder in-stock, and I decided to buy a can. After eating the chowder a few days later, I decided it was one of the best soups I've ever eaten. Since then, I've purchased two additional cans online. Here's a quick review of Campbell's Chunky Clam & Corn Chowder.

Size
The standard-sized can of Campbell's Chunky Clam & Corn Chowder weighs-in at 18.8 ounces. The label says it contains about two servings, but one can is just the right-sized serving for myself. When served with egg noodles, rice or mashed potatoes, with bread and butter, you can really have an "Mmm mmm good" meal.

Price
At Hartford, Connecticut-area supermarkets, the regular retail price for one 18.8 ounce can of Campbell's Chunky Clam & Corn Chowder is approximately $2.99.

Appearance
This clam and corn chowder looks quite appetizing, right out of the can. The off-white broth is accented with good-sized pieces of clams and vegetables, creating a culinary image that's easy on the eyes.

Consistency
The consistency, or texture of Campbell's Chunky Clam & Corn Chowder is, as the name suggests, chunky. The clean-tasting pieces of clams are appropriately chewy, but not rubbery. Bite-sized chunks of potatoes and yellow corn kernels co-mingle with small pieces of celery and red pepper in a creamy broth that's not too thick and not too thin.

Nutritional Facts
The 18.8 ounce can of Campbell's Chunky Clam & Corn Chowder contains two servings, and one serving contains 180 calories. Each serving contains 2 grams saturated fat, 0 grams trans fat, 10 grams total fat, 10 mg of cholesterol, 890 mg of sodium, 18 grams total carbs, 1 gram of dietary fiber, 3 grams total sugars and 5 grams of protein, per one-cup serving.

Flavor
On several occasions now, I've eaten Campbell's Chunky Clam & Corn Chowder. Every time I've eaten it, the soup has tasted great, and I've been very satisfied. The clams and corn kernels in the soup are plentiful and tasty, the potatoes are cooked just right and the creamy broth has a pleasing, New England-style flavor.

On the can's front label, it says this soup is flavored with bacon, and a subtle, yet effective amont of bacon flavor can be detected.

Overall Rating
All things considered, Campbell's Chunky Clam & Corn Chowder is an excellent product that essentially combines two classic soups into one. When served atop some white rice, it makes for a mighty satisfying dinner.

On a flavor scale of one through ten, I would assign Campbell's Chunky Clam & Corn Chowder a rating of 9.5. Highly recommended.

At Moe's Southwest Grill Restaurants, Rewards Program Members Receive a Tasty Gift on Their Birthday

On a regular basis, I visit the Moe's Southwest Grill store at Bishop's Corner in West Hartford to purchase their outstanding tacos. Approximately a year and a half ago, I started buying food to-go from Moe's, and everything I've ordered has been very good.

After visiting Moe's a couple of times, I checked-out their website one night, and discovered that the chain offers a rewards program aptly named Moe Rewards. One of the factors that led me to sign up for the rewards program was the free burrito that members receive on their birthday every year.

The Moe Rewards program can be accessed via their website or you can use the Moe's app. When you sign up, you get a free cup of queso on your next visit, and every year on your birthday, you'll receive a free Moe's burrito or burrito bowl.

Last week, I celebrated a birthday, and a few days prior to that, I received an email from Moe's reminding me of the free burrito birthday present. The email said the free burrito was available for pickup, to-go, curbside and delivery.

My birthday was on a Sunday this year, and I often go to Big Y and/or Moe's on Sunday. It seemed like a good idea to go get a free burrito, so off I went. While I was sitting still in my little Miata in the Big Y parking lot next to Moe's, some guy backed his car into my left rear quarter-panel. The guy said the Miata is so low to the ground he couldn't see me.

I'm convinced a miracle happened that day at Bishop's Corner. The other car backed right into the Miata; I could feel and hear the impact. There was no real damage, though. A 1/16-inch scratch is the only damage that I can see.

Once I determined I could finally try to get the free burrito, I headed into Moe's. Per Moe's tradition, the staff members shouted-out "Welcome to Moe's" when I walked in. The three women working behind the counter were friendly, and they showed a great sense of teamwork.

It was good to hear that the free birthday burrito can be ordered the traditional way-in a tortilla, or in a bowl. Within about five minutes, my ground beef burrito bowl was being placed in a to-go bag, and I was thanking the staff members for a fun experience.

If you're not already a Moe Rewards member, it's worth signing up for, if you'd enjoy receiving a free burrito on your birthday. Your burrito can contain your choice of ground beef, sirloin steak, white meat chicken, Adobo chicken, pork or organic tofu. There are 15 fresh, free ingredients that can be added to your burrito/bowl, as well as several additional cost add-ons.

Another example of how you can benefit from being a Moe Rewards member is the free delivery fees promotion the restaurant chain is offering during the month of September 2022.

Burger King's Hershey's (R) Sundae Pie is the Type of Dessert You Have Fantasies About

One of the things I really like about living in Hartford's West End is having a Burger King restaurant situated on Farmington Avenue. My apartment is only two blocks away, and I can walk over there in five minutes.

On average, I order food to-go from that Burger King about twice a week, and quite often, their Hershey's (R) Sundae Pie is one of the items I order.

Burger King's Hershey's (R) Sundae Pie is essentially a slice of high quality, chocolate cream pie. This dessert is so awesome I have to let other people know just how good it is.

Appearance

Burger King's Hershey's (R) Sundae Pie is a great dessert that has a very appetizing appearance. The pie has a dark, crunchy chocolate crust, and the first layer is a cream cheese/whipped cream. This is topped with a fluffy, chocolate creme filling, then more whipped cream on top of that.

To further accentuate a great thing, HERSHEY'S chocolate chips are sprinkled over the top.

On the burgerking.com website, the pie's chocolate filling is described as chocolate ice cream, and on the bk.com website, the filling is described as chocolate creme.

Size

The net weight of one Burger King Hershey's (R) Sundae Pie is 79 grams, approximately 2.8 ounces.

Because of  the slice's fairly small size, I always intend to eat them slowly, but never do, because they taste so good, it's hard to stop eating one, once you've started.

Price

Three days ago, I bought two Hershey's Sundae Pies at the Farmington Avenue Burger King. Although I threw the receipt away, I'm pretty sure the price is $2.00 for each slice. (As of 9/2/22)

Nutritional Facts

Each slice of Burger King's Hershey's Sundae Pie contains 295 calories. The pie contains 17 grams total fat, 0.5 grams of cholesterol, 31 grams of carbohydrates, 1 gram of fiber, 21 grams of sugar and 2.9 grams of protein.

Flavor

Of all the different types of desserts I've tried at various fast food restaurants, Burger King's Hershey's (R) Sundae Pie is by far the best I've found yet. The pie is so good, I find myself thinking about eating it on a fairly regular basis.

The combination of chocolate creme and whipped cream creates an almost mousse-like effect, and it's not overly sweet. For chocolate cream pie-lovers, like myself, the flavor of this pie is a very good version of the traditional-style pie.

The cool, creamy flavor of this pie provides an excellent ending to meals of Whopper Juniors, chicken sandwiches, onion rings and French fries.

Texture/ Consistency

In addition to its outstanding flavor, Burger King's Hershey's (R) Sundae Pie offers several pleasing textures. The mild crunch of the dark chocolate crust complements the cool and soft cream cheese/whipped cream very well.

Overall Rating

There aren't too many really good desserts on the menus at most fast food restaurants. All things considered, Burger King's Hershey's (R) Sundae Pie is top-rate dessert that's also reasonably priced. This product is very highly recommended.

Eddy Grant - Electric Avenue

Life in 1983 wasn't too bad, overall. The world wasn't generally as stressful, and lots of good music was still being made then.

Good vibes were being spread by Guyanese-British musician Eddy Grant, with his "Electric Avenue" song. After the song's video began airing regularly on the then-young MTV network, the song became very popular, and became one of the year's top-selling records.

Located in the Brixton district of London, Electric Avenue is a real street. A diverse population lives in the Brixton area, and the song Electric Avenue reflects several different musical styles.

Interestingly, several reliable Internet websites feature articles regarding a lawsuit that Eddy Grant filed in 2020 against Former President Donald Trump.

According to the Business Insider website, an animated Twitter tweet from the former President in August 2020 used Electric Avenue as background music in the tweet. The tweet was released during the 2020 presidential race, and was not complimentary to now-President Joe Biden.

The BI article says that Mr. Grant's lawsuit was seeking $300,000 in damages.

Grocery Home Delivery from Stop & Shop is a Great Option for Any Size Household

Do you enjoy grocery shopping? Grocery shopping is something I've generally enjoyed since I was a kid.

In today's consumer-driven society, most of us utilize the same the same type of products, month after month. While it's easy to remember to purchase regularly used items, remembering to buy household staples and seldom-used products can be more difficult.

When you shop online at stopandshop.com, there's no hurry, and you can check-out specific items for as long as you want.

Even though I regularly shop in-store at both West Hartford Stop & Shop locations, as well as Big Y at Bishop's Corner, I find that periodic Stop & Shop grocery home deliveries are a big help.

Price

The delivery fee that Stop & Shop charged for last week's big grocery order was $6.95. That's a very reasonable fee, in my opinion, and I don't mind paying it at all.

While I do consistently shop in the local stores for week-to week items, I was running low on several staples. Actually, I was running some things out in preparation for a home delivery from Stop & Shop.

Ease of Ordering

Ordering groceries for home delivery on the Stop & Shop website is very easy. Food items are separated into categories, similar to the aisles in the physical stores.

A very cool option allows you to add or subtract items from your "list" until approximately four hours before the scheduled delivery time.

When deciding what the best delivery date would be, the Stop & Shop site allows you to schedule a delivery up to 13 days in advance.

Convenience

With today's busy schedules, it's great to be able to take your time with grocery shopping. Last Saturday, I had a grocery home delivery from Stop & Shop, but I was adding or removing items from the order for several days, before it was finalized.

Competition

When Shop-Rite still had its massive store on Kane Street in West Hartford, I used to get grocery home delivery from there approximately twice a year. Since Shop-Rite pulled out of West Hartford in 2019, the options for delivery are few.

As far I know, Crown Supermarket features home delivery, and Big Y offers Instacart grocery home delivery. Whole Foods also has an Amazon-connected grocery home delivery option.

The Delivery

It's very apparent that the entire Stop & Shop grocery home delivery system is an organized, highly-efficient organization. With last week's order, the delivery window was between 6:00-7:00 p.m., and the driver arrived at 6:45 p.m.

Most of the delivered items were separated into plastic bags by category. Once the delivery truck arrived, it took about 10 minutes for the driver to bring the items into the building.

As for maintaining the temperatures of the foods, the items for delivery are packed in ice in the delivery trucks. The refrigerated items I ordered were nice and cold when they arrived, and the frozen foods were still frozen.

The entire delivery experience took approximately 15 minutes, because the driver was parked a good distance from my door. The driver was really hustling in the 90-degree heat, and I gave him a $5 tip.

All things considered, grocery home delivery from Stop & Shop  is a great option for any size household.
